Lew drove east, hoping today would turn out better than yesterday had.

He’d been stripped of his Permanent status within the Auxiliaries and put on six months’

probation. A week before, he’d been quietly scanning crowds and had found a kid, a teenager, with no ID. Lew had roughed him up a bit, nothing too serious, and turned him over to Peace Enforcement. While he didn’t have a quota then, he still got paid for his ad-hoc activity, so it was worth doing some solo side work while he lined up the bigger scores using his network of informants.

Turned out the kid was the son of a high-level foreigner who had brought his entire family over, something Lew had heard about but hadn’t seen in person. Kid had been too shocked to plead his case, not that it would have mattered to Lew at the time. Everyone he ran into said they knew someone important who could make trouble for him. This time, it was actually true.

Had he not been one of the top Auxiliaries in the area and deemed worthy of redemption, they probably would have taken him out back and given him a supersonic lead implant in the back of his closely-shorn head.

If he’d been someone like Traylor, there sitting in the passenger seat. The other half of his punishment. Being stuck with the idiot again.

“Tell me why the hell we’re heading this way? There’s no people out here,” Dillon complained.

“Some local group killed or chased away most of the Auxiliaries. I thought you knew that, bud.”

Dillon stared at him. “Are you being serious right now? That’s your plan? To go into a war zone?”

“Look, Traylor, you’re on probation. I’m on probation. You really think we can play it safe, hang out down by the big zocks where there’s dozens of us already doin’ work? People there are already toeing the line and doing what they’re told. That’s what the zocks are for, the quiet peaceful types. Out here, it’s the wild wild West. Everyone’s either breaking the law or is helping someone who is. All we have to do is catch them in the act.”

“Like last year. The morons up at that lake the Forcers wasted while we watched.”

Lew shook his head. “Naw. Not that easy anymore. More like the group I busted last summer, all living in normal houses doing pretty normal stuff. Blending in, y’know? They’re not going to be in a big camp full of openly armed ODTs. Suckers who did that are all wiped out by now. No, Traylor, you’re finally going to get that crash course in searching people.”

“I already know all that. I’ve been an Auxiliary for over a year, Riggs.”

Lew raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? And you’re so great at this that you’re on probation status.”

“So are you.”

“Different reason. I was doing my job, I just did it to the wrong guy. So tell me. What are the biggest clues you should look for? You can’t just search everyone who comes near you.
